Science Autumn Walk

This week in Year 1 we put on our coats and headed out into the school grounds to become ACE Scientists. Our aim? To make careful scientific observations. Before we set off we thought about what we already knew about the seasons, particularly Autumn. The children came up with ideas such as, ‘The leaves are changing colour,’ and ‘The leaves are turning red, yellow, brown and orange’.

During our walk the children were excited to see that many of the trees had leaves that had changed colour. We also found lots of leaves on the floor and collected some to explore in more detail. We noticed that not all the trees had leaves that were changing colour and that these called evergreen trees.

Each reception class chooses a class tree at the start of the year. We make regular visits to our trees and observe how they change through the seasons.

Observing and Classifying

Year 6 have been collecting, observing, identifying and classifying leaves to be found in our school grounds. The leaves were then sorted these using a classification key.

STEM Visitor for Science Week

On Tuesday 10th March we were lucky to have Mr Cooper in to speak to us about his job as a Structural Engineer.

He talked to us about why he became an engineer, the subjects he enjoyed at school and what his job involves.

We saw lots of photos of a building that he engineered in Leeds City Centre.

We talked lots about bracing and the importance of safety and stability in buildings.

Air Resistance!

Today 5MJ had a practical experience of air resistance when we tried to run with and without an umbrella. We found it was easier without!

Orange and Banana music

Adwaya in year 6 has made a circuit and programmed his micro:bit so that when you tap the orange and banana it plays a tune. He created this at home and brought in the parts to show us. Very impressive I thought!
