Heart Dissection

Today in Science Year 6 examined and dissected sheep hearts.  As part of our Science curriculum we have been studying  human circulation,  and functions of parts of the heart,  and this practical activity really helped our understanding of all that had been learnt.  The children were fascinated and very enthusiastic to be involved.

I really enjoyed the lesson and my favourite part was cutting the heart and seeing the interior.

I liked to be able to see the heart as it was very interesting.  The valves were very long.  The experience was fun.

People who help us

As part of our topic,  ‘People who help us’, we discussed how helpful it was that our rubbish is collected. We explored which items could go in which bins. We also sorted materials into plastics, card and metals so that we could place them in the correct DT workshop boxes. William made a boat from a milk bottle and some paper. He was very proud to explain that he had tested it at home and it floats. Sam – our scientist of the week – emptied our fruit waste onto the compost heap.

UN International Day of Women and Girls in Science

In recognition of the above at Allerton C of E we have been studying eminent female scientists and finding out about their work and its impact on the world. 

We also invited in any parents/carers who are female scientists to give a short talk about their work in the hope of raising aspirations amongst girls,  that they too could have a career in Science.   Year 6 were lucky to have visits from 3 parents who shared information about their jobs and also how they had to work towards their particular career.  The children were really interested, engaged and inspired.  

The visitors also seemed to enjoy the experience – see feedback below.

6K were extremely welcoming and listened with great enthusiasm! They all participated extremely well and I was impressed with the knowledge they showed about the electricity network as we discussed just how the lights were kept on at school and how my previous work related to that!!

We are very grateful to those parents for giving up their time.

Testing conductors and insulators

This week in Science, we have been testing some everyday materials and classroom objects to see whether electricity can travel through them.

We then used this information to help us to decide whether these materials were conductors or insulators and we plotted these onto a Venn diagram to help us see any patterns.

It’s been all about words in Year 4 this week (…just kidding…it is every week!) however we have introduced a new strategy called ’taking our words for a walk’. The children have been examining words and thinking about how they could be used in many different contexts and encounters. Could you try this at home?

We have also tasked the children with hunting down their fuse box at home with the help of an adult!

Year 5 SUPER SCIENCE

This week, to embed our knowledge of planets and the solar system, we created a scaled model of the solar system. We used fruit to make a memorable model that shows the relative size of the planets, the distance of each planet from the Sun and the spacing between the planets.

We did this because scientists frequently build models of the objects they are studying are either unimaginably large or too small to see. We are ACE scientists.

Science at High School

This week, Year 6 have started weekly visits to Allerton High School to carry out practical investigations using the laboratories there.  We got off to a good start by learning about laboratory expectations and the safe use of the Bunsen burner.  We also burnt some steel wool and wondered at the resulting “firework like” sparkles. As well as being a great Science opportunity, this is also a good transition activity to help the year 6s feel more confident about moving to high school.

Light investigations

Year 6 have been investigating the fact that light travels in straight lines and that we see things because light travels from light sources to our eyes or from light sources to objects and then to our eyes.

We have carried out some investigations and have also made our own periscopes!
